The rate of successfully securing a job is closely related and dependent on the background preparations/efforts made for it. The right angle to look for which area and what to prepare in can be found in the experiences of people who are already familiar with the job searching process and those who have already secured a job position for themselves.
Skill lab in its online survey (2021) asked the master’s students about their experiences of searching and securing a job. These master’s students are studying in 14 different academic institutions in Nepal. Among our respondents, 56% are already fully employed, 28% are actively searching for a job, 8% were doing part-time jobs, and 8% were unemployed at the moment.
The respondents pointed out 4 things when asked about the most difficult part of securing a job. Now, let us tell you the connection between these difficulties and the part they play in preparation for successfully landing a job:
1) Not finding the right job according to qualification and interest
This can become a massive problem if you spent years achieving academic qualifications but cannot find the right job for you. The solution for this can be enrolling yourself in job role training like the ones Skill Lab offers. In this training, the interested candidates are trained on the specific roles and responsibilities of a specific job role. During the training, you can make yourself familiar with the job you aspire to have as well as gauge your interest in it.
2) As a fresher, not having a prior work experience
It is indeed true that some job roles ask for some kind of experience in the field beforehand when they publish job vacancies. But according to our initial research titled ‘Employers’ perspective’, employers are more than willing to take the candidates if they are interested and have a talent for the job even without prior experience. Another solution can be to have internships while studying and before taking the official job. Last but not the least, there are plenty of companies that take fresher as their employees. Skill Lab partners with different companies and organizations that offer these jobs and provide access to interviews at these companies.
3) Nepotism
15 % of the respondents have pointed out nepotism as a factor that makes it difficult to secure a job. But again, the employer most definitely values the growth of their business more than anything else. If you are well prepared and qualified for the job, nepotism should not make to the list of worries in seeking a job.
4) High Market Competition
According to International Labor Organization (ILO), Over 400,000 young people are estimated to enter the labour force every year in Nepal. It is definitely a high market competition situation. So, to make oneself different and more qualified than all the others in the competition, the preparations of both theoretical and practical knowledge are needed. The training you attend, the network of people you associate with, the time you allocate for developing your skills, and other personal development agendas are the preparations one needs in order to successfully secure a job.
